Many of us, myself included, love Christmas music. When we sing Christmas hymns like O Come O Come Emmanuel, we lift up our voices alongside Christians through centuries of history and wisdom. Let’s come together to learn about, meditate upon, and even sing these Advent and Christmas hymns of the past in order to prepare our hearts for Jesus.
Dr. Grace Hamman is a writer and podcaster. She received her doctorate in English from Duke University in 2019. She is the creator of Old Books with Grace, a podcast that explores and celebrates the literature of the past (available on any podcasting platform!). Her first book, The Many Faces of Jesus, explores ideas about Jesus in medieval art and literature––published by Zondervan and hitting shelves October 2023. Grace and her husband, Scott, have three young kids: Margaret, Simon, and Constance.
Details:
Sun Nov 27 - O Come, O Come Emmanuel
This 1200-year-old carol is actually a puzzle! Discover why, and dive deep into the wisdom & beauty of a very, very old song sung by many voices in worship and yearning.
Sun Dec 4 - The Coventry Carol
This haunting medieval carol is the opposite of holly jolly. From fifteenth-century plays to World War II, this song has spoken to those who mourn, and functioned as a warning for the church, much like John the Baptist’s words in the Advent liturgy.
Sun Dec 11 - Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Charles Wesley’s glorious eighteenth-century mega-hit is also a theological powerhouse. What does this hymn teach us about the Incarnation?
Sun Dec 18 - O Come All Ye Faithful
In this final session, let us prepare our hearts for adoration. How does the Baby Jesus help us learn to love himself and one another?
