The Great Vigil of Easter

This service of new fire, candlelight, and bells anticipates the joy of the resurrection with various readings from scripture of God’s salvation history. We will also celebreate Baptisms at the Great Vigil which is an ancient custom as the joy of Easter dawns. We move from darkness into light with the exuberant proclamation of the resurrection and celebrate the first Holy Eucharist of Easter.

The congregation waits in eager anticipation the lights are thrown on and the announcement is made, “Alleluia, Christ is risen!” All shout in return, “The Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia!” The lights go up and joyful bells are rung as music springs up the flowers of Easter are revealed in the most exuberant celebration continues in the light of the resurrection.

This dramatic and powerful service is not to be missed. If you’ve never celebrated Easter with the Great Vigil, you’ll never celebrate it the same again!
