Update 2/24/2022
Greetings from Metro Caring! First and foremost, on behalf of the entire organization, I would like to sincerely thank everyone at Christ Church for your longtime, consistent and generous support of our mission to end hunger at its root.
Many of you are familiar with the anti-hunger work we do at Metro Caring, and several of you have personally been involved one way or another for many years.
As a church body, you have blessed us with your generosity through financial gifts, food donations and volunteer hours – and we are so grateful for your support.
We say it all the time – we can’t do this work alone. It truly takes the commitment from our greater community to do this work – work that God calls us to do. Never has that been more true than over the past couple of years.
At the onset of the pandemic in 2020, we saw an immediate 300 percent increase in demand for food – and of course, COVID’s economic impact has continued to linger for so many people.
In response to this overwhelming need, we saw our community come together in astounding ways. With generous support from people like you, we raised enough funds to cover the increased costs for things like food purchases in order to stay up and running and meet the needs of our community members – and eventually being able to re-open our Fresh Foods Market this past summer.
Our mission at Metro Caring is to work with our community to meet people’s immediate need for nutritious food, while building a movement to address the root causes of hunger – in order to someday eradicate it altogether.
At Metro Caring, we talk about a concept we call food sovereignty – which at its core means that access to healthy, nutritious food is a right, not a privilege. Yet, people throughout our community continue to struggle to adequately provide for themselves and their families. And chances are, if you don’t have enough money to buy food, you’re probably facing a lot of other challenges as well.
A couple of quick things about hunger:
Hunger does not take a holiday. It is a persistent and ever-present challenge in the lives of so many of our community members.
Hunger is not caused by a lack of food. We have plenty of food in this country to ensure that no one goes hungry. Hunger is primarily caused by people not having enough money to buy the food they need.
That’s why, along with meeting people’s immediate need for nutritious food, we’re committed to tackling the roots causes of hunger with a goal of building a movement that creates a more inclusive economy where everyone can afford to put food on the table.
So certainly, the past couple of years, much like it’s been since Metro Caring’s inception 47 years ago, has been very busy and challenging, but very rewarding at the same time.
Again, we are all in this together and we cannot do this work without you. With your help, we are making a direct, positive impact in the lives of people throughout our community who need it most.
